TAKE BUSINESS TO GET AHEAD IN YOUR CAREER AND LIFE
Computers are a vital component in all aspects of today's society. They can be found in homes, offices, banks and stores and play a large role in business, communications, science and medicine. As the range of computer applications continues to grow, so does the need for Computer Scientists.
At Sudbury Secondary School we offer a variety of Computer Science courses designed to introduce students to this exciting career field. Students use a variety of programming languages to create computer programs to learn about the stages in software design, the fundamental programming constructs of sequence, selection and repetition as well as other advanced programming concepts.
In addition, students learn about the functions of computer hardware components, the relationship among networks, operating systems, application software and even robotics. They also have the opportunity to develop Web-ready communication skills in graphics manipulation and animation, as well as web page development and design.
We take a project based approach to develop the knowledge needed to compete in the technological world of today, and to adapt and excel in the changing world of tomorrow.
Earn while you learn.
The Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) allows students to earn up to 12 credits while experiencing the world of work. Co-op allows students in all pathways - workplace, apprenticeship, college or university - to participate.
Placements can be paid or non-paid and are arranged by integrating course curriculum with learning at a work placement. Students are supported and monitored by a work supervisor and the co-op teacher. Arrange a meeting with guidance to register for this experiential learning opportunity.
Sudbury Secondary School’s English Department is a dynamic experience for students at all levels of study. The department’s teachers, passionate about their subject, not only engage students through their own enthusiasm for English, but through a multitude of teaching strategies. These range from traditional lecture, question and answer, to differentiated instruction. The English Department is grounded in Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy, with a focus on high expectations, cultural competence, and critical consciousness. Additionally, teachers utilize Google Apps for Education, SMARTBOARD technology, and class sets of Chromebooks and iPads to further enhance student learning.
The departments’ extensive collection of literature, which includes many classics and contemporary novels, nonfiction writing, plays, and poetry, forms the core of its reading-based philosophy. It is the belief that involved and sustained reading generates necessary ideas for committed writing. The department frequently collaborates with community members to help bring literature to life for our students.
As stated in the Ministry of Education’s Ontario Schools, Kindergarten to Grade 12: Policy and Program Requirements, 2011, secondary school students are required to successfully complete the literacy requirement before graduation with a Secondary School Diploma.
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) is written by all students in the province working toward an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and measures whether students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Annually, eligible students complete this test.
The OSSLT is a standards-based assessment comprised of 2 sessions that include several short reading articles as well as written responses such as multiple-choice questions, short answer responses, and a series of paragraphs expressing an opinion. The test time allotted is 75 minutes* for each session.
To help prepare students for the OSSLT we offer diagnostic assessments and a practice literacy test. These diagnostic tools are marked by teachers who provide valuable feedback and opportunities for students to receive additional support and practice.
Students can greatly enhance their chances of success on the OSST by maintaining good attendance, completing all assignments, reading on a daily basis, taking advantage of opportunities to improve their literacy skills, applying teacher feedback and attending in-school workshops.
Students and parents can access additional information and practice materials from the EQAO website: www.eqao.com
The Mathematics department at Sudbury Secondary School offers a variety of courses from grades 9 through 12 in three different streams: College, University and Workplace. Our teachers offer a variety of innovative teaching methods to help meet all of our students’ needs.
Grade 9 and soon to be Grade 10 Mathematics courses are now de-streamed. The vision of these mathematics courses is to support all students as they develop healthy and strong identities as mathematics learners. The Mathematics team at Sudbury Secondary School has been an integral part of the development and implementation of course supports for the new de-streamed curriculum as well as the spiraling documents now being delivered across the Rainbow District Board.
Our dedicated teachers offer math help sessions every Tuesday and Thursday at lunch. Math study sessions are held in room 315 and are a great way for students to receive individual help, get caught up on homework, and/or study for upcoming tests.
Every year, our most promising math students are invited to participate in the University of Waterloo’s provincial math contest. The grade 9, 10, and 11 contests will take place in February, and the grade 12 contest in April. Any students interested in participating in the contests should see Ms. Gibbs.
Every year Sudbury Secondary offers a wide variety of physical and health education courses for those students that wish to be active and maintain or improve their fitness during the school year.
The Science Department at Sudbury Secondary School seeks to provide students of all academic levels and pathways with opportunities to learn, practice, and master skills necessary to responsibly and successfully handle challenges in future professions and life. Science programs are aligned with the Ontario Curriculum, and are delivered in safe, supportive laboratory environments. We aim to provide opportunities for all students to collaboratively investigate and solve conceptual and real-world problems.
We believe that our students are unique individuals, that we will guide, challenge and support to become scientifically literate citizens. It is our goal to inspire our students to pursue careers in STEM and become life-long learners. We aim to facilitate students to become effective problem solvers, independent learners, and critical thinkers.

Students in humanities courses have been involved in school and community Remembrance Day ceremonies. Law students have the option to be involved in the city wide mock trial competition held at the Sudbury Courthouse. Sudbury Secondary has won this competition on a number of occasions.

The Technological Studies at Sudbury Secondary School foster hands-on, real-world learning while enhancing literacy and numeracy skills, problem-solving and entrepreneurial thinking. Because of the nature of ever-evolving technology, students are encouraged to become lifelong learners, and collaborate to solve problems while being flexible to think critically and work and learn independently when necessary. All these are valuable skills for students to learn even if technology is not their chosen career path.
There are hundreds of exciting and rewarding entry-level jobs should students choose to join the workforce in trades after graduation. Other pathways include college, university and apprenticeships. An advantage to taking an apprenticeship is, once completed, candidates will earn a Red Seal designation as a tradesperson that is recognized Canada-wide. Of course, there are opportunities for students to earn apprenticeship while in school through OYAP and there are also opportunities to earn college credits in their chosen field through the Dual Credit program.
We offer courses in Trades and the Skilled Trades (TAS course code) for grade 9 students that provide the opportunity for students to explore four distinct yet interrelated areas of technology. These courses are offered to students in grades 10 through twelve as Construction Technology, Design Technology and Transportation Technology. The Transportation Technology course offers students the opportunity to develop skills in manufacturing, outdoor power equipment and more complex systems found in passenger vehicles.
One aim of the technology department is not only to complement the Arts department but to advance it through technology and skills used in movie/stage design and construction. We aim to bring STEAM to S.S.S. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) and to create a Maker Space for the benefit of the entire school. We have a well-equipped shop that is continuously growing and offer exceptional safety training,
We have a Wood Club that runs each Wednesday offering among other activities, lessons in woodturning. Our woodturnings are offered for sale at local vendors and the funds raised from that are used to make purchases of 3D printers, new equipment and upgrades. Students are able to earn community hours for this and other endeavours such as set building. We are involved in initiatives that support Women in the Trades and FNMI trades initiatives. Each year, students have the opportunity to participate in the Local Skills competition which leads to the provincial and national levels of the same competition.
